MATTHEW WILLIAMSON has created his debut line of leather handbags, an extension of the label's existing evening bag category. The inaugural range features a mix of handheld totes, duffle styles and compact across-body chain bags.
"I wanted to create a collection of leather handbags which would not only reflect the brand's DNA, but also appeal to a busy cosmopolitan woman," Williamson told us. "Listening to my clients, I know how busy they are and how much goes on day-to-day - so it was really a reaction to this. I wanted to design a collection which would appeal to their lifestyle."
Each of the five styles are hand-crafted in Italy, created using a range of textured grained leather, calf skin and colourful woven jacquard which echoes the rose tapestry fabrics that appeared in the label's autumn/winter 2013-14 show. The collection will be available from September at the brand's Bruton Street London flagship store. Prices range from £395 to £1,300.
"Leather has a real durability and functionality," added Williamson. "It gets better with age, so mixing it with signature elements - a flash of neon, textured materials and rich tapestry jacquards - gives the collection a real balance of utility and style."
