Velaa is actually the name of a species of sea turtles that have inhabited the island for countless years, which is why Czech architect Petr Kolar designed the luxury resort so that – from an aerial view – the Velaa’s exclusive over-water villas resemble the head of a turtle, with the main island forming the body. The overall design boasts contemporary chic lines blended with Maldivian nuances. The luxury Maldivian resort offers 43 private villas and five four-bedroom residences; each private retreat boasts plenty of outdoor space and private pool. There’s a ‘romantic villa’, the only exclusive villa that is reached by boat.
The resort also features a ‘raised-tree meditation platform’ where guests are encouraged to meditate, if they are inclined to do so. Submarine expeditions, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing are all among the activities you may enjoy while at the Velaa, but golf lovers can craft their game at the golf academy, designed by Spanish professional golfer Jose Maria Olazabal.
